GUS: labor market in May 2026

Average employment

Average employment in the enterprise sector (with more than 9 employees) in May 2026 amounted to 6,377.4 thousand and, as in April this year, was 0.9% lower than a year ago.

The deepest decrease in average employment on an annual basis in May this year was recorded in mining and quarrying (it amounted to 5.5%). Among the analyzed sections, employment also decreased in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (by 1.6%), manufacturing (by 1.4%), real estate activities and in information and communication (a decrease of 0.8% each), trade; repair of motor vehicles (by 0.7%), administrative and support service activities (by 0.6%), transportation and storage (by 0.3%) and in construction (by 0.2%). On the other hand, employment increased on an annual basis in water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities (by 3.7%) and in accommodation and catering (by 1.7%).

Unemployment

The registered unemployment rate was 5.9%, i.e. it decreased by 0.1 percentage points compared to the previous month, but increased by 0.8 percentage points compared to the corresponding period of last year.

Redundancies

In May this year, 35 enterprises planned the redundancy of 1.7 thousand employees. The scale of planned redundancies was smaller than in the previous month and than a year ago. At the end of May this year, 212 enterprises declared their intention to dismiss 20.9 thousand employees under group layoffs.

Nominal and real gross wages and salaries

In May 2026, the average monthly gross wage and salary in the enterprise sector (in units with more than 9 employees) amounted to PLN 9,173.24 and increased on an annual basis by 5.8% (against an increase of 5.4% in April this year and by 8.4% in May last year). Its purchasing power increased on an annual basis by 2.5% (in April this year it grew by 2.1%, and in May last year – by 4.4%)
