GUS: average employment in April 2026
In April, average employment fell by 0.9%, and unemployment stood at 6.0% (a year-on-year increase of 0.8 percentage points).

Average employment in the enterprise sector1 in April 2026 was 6,386.4 thousand and was 0.9% lower than a year ago (compared to a decrease of 0.8% in April of the previous year).
In the period January–April this year, average employment in the enterprise sector was 6,387.1 thousand and was 1.0% lower than in the corresponding period of the previous year.
Sectors with the largest decreases: Employment shrank the most in mining and quarrying (-4.8%), manufacture of furniture (-3.7%), manufacture of motor vehicles (-3.6%), and manufacture of rubber and plastic products (-3.5%).
Sectors with increases: Increases in employment were recorded, among others, in water supply and waste management (+3.4%), manufacture of machinery and equipment (+1.6%), and in accommodation and catering (+1.3%).
UNEMPLOYMENT
The registered unemployment rate was 6.0%, i.e. it decreased by 0.1 percentage points in comparison with the previous month, but increased by 0.8 percentage points compared to the corresponding period of the previous year.
Group layoffs
In April this year, 63 enterprises planned the layoff of 4.2 thousand employees. The scale of the planned layoffs was larger than a month ago and larger than a year ago. At the end of April this year, 204 enterprises declared their intention to lay off 21.5 thousand employees as part of planned group layoffs.
